A coil tattoo machine is a traditional tattoo machine that uses electromagnetic coils and springs to move the needle. For a long time, the unmistakable buzz of coil machines was the sound of tattooing itself.

So where did coil tattoo machines go?

Nowhere.

They’re still the best tattoo machines ever made for a lot of styles of tattooing.

Rotaries and pen machines took over because they’re convenient. They’re lightweight, simple, and easy to use. But convenience and performance are not always the same thing.

A properly tuned coil machine gives a level of feedback, control, and precision that many tattooers still believe can’t be replicated. They respond to the skin differently. They can be tuned for specific jobs with incredible accuracy. And despite what many people assume, coils can be incredibly smooth and gentle on the skin.

That’s why so many experienced tattooers never stopped using them.

Not because they’re stubborn.

Because they work.

There’s also a craftsmanship behind coil machines that got lost when tattooing became more plug and play. Tuning mattered. Understanding your machine mattered. Builders mattered. Machines had personality.

And while the industry changed, coils never stopped producing great tattoos.

If anything, more artists are starting to appreciate them again. Not as some vintage novelty, but as precision tools that still excel at what they were designed to do.

Coil machines didn’t disappear.

A lot of tattooers just stopped taking the time to learn them.
